Night two of Decibel Fest proved to be more than we hoped for. Again we found ourselves at the Nuemos venue for the Flylo & Friends showcase which after experiencing it, it needed to be appropriately renamed as: Flying mutha effin Lotus and the Bleeding Edge Showcase of Never Ending Goodness! The lineup consisted of Truckasaurus, Samiyam, Lorn, Eskmo, and a Flying Lotus live band accompanied by Thunderkat on bass and a kit drummer.
FYI :: Big thanks my right hand man and photographer Daniel Zetterstrom for all of the photo work that accompanies this feature!
Lorn
Everyone in attendance last night could confirm that Lorn’s set was a winner. He masterfully conducted his love for sound by the swing in his body, his flowing hands in the air, and the perma-grin on his face as he unleashed tunes from his Nothing Else LP and None an Island EP. Rounding out the tail end of his set was one of our 2010 faves “Cherry Moon.”
We hopped backstage to grab a moment with him, which turned out to be a parade in some of the beat scenes best talent this side of the rabbit hole.
IAAL :: How was your set tonight?:
LORN :: I had a good time. I think it went well. It’s hard to see what’s happening out there, I guess.
IAAL :: Well, there was a lot of bumping and grinding out there… so I would say; mission accomplished!
LORN :: Excellent!
IAAL :: Tell us about your performance tonight. What’s inspiring to you right now?
LORN :: Been working on that set for awhile. I pretty much like to keep it heavy for myself, kinda heavy, but still a bit instrumental, ya know. It’s not necessarily party music, but I think people can get down to it.
IAAL :: You seem to be riding a nice balance between the beat driven scene but it’ still dancy.
LORN :: Yeah, it just so happens that it works out. I do a lot a Hip Hop tempo shit. I do a lot a of what people call Dubstep tempo shit nowadays. It’s all stuff that, quite honestly, I just want to hear loud not in my studio.
IAAL :: Is this your first Decibel Fest?
LORN :: Mmmhmm. My first time in Seattle. It’s pretty rad so far. Samiyam killed for sure, as usual. Eskmo is up now. Seems like a good group of people. Good scene, if you want to call it that.
IAAL :: Glad to hear “Cherry Moon” in your set. One of our favorite tracks for 2010.
LORN :: I wrote that tune actually in like 2007. So it’s one of the older tunes on my album (Nothing Else). My buddy Salva, thought I was possessed when I wrote that tune. People seem to like it.
IAAL :: So what’s next?
LORN :: I have an EP coming out on Brainfeeder called None an Island which had one of the tracks from my from Album None an Island. It also has a collaboration with Samiyam, a new track Never Enough, and the track Until There Is No End, which I also played tonight. Until There Is No End is probably the highlight of the EP. I think just cause when I was writing it, I was in my room just screaming, fucking yelling my ass off, adding layers upon layers of vocals.
(Flying Lotus enters the green room)
LORN :: What’s up Flylo.
FLYLO :: How ya doing!
IAAL :: When does None an Island come out?
LORN :: The album came out in June and the EP came out on the 13th of September on the Brainfeeder Label. I’m working on a new album right now that is a bit different from what I’ve previously put out. Michael Jordan is the name of it, if that’s any indication of its sound.
(Lorn’s Sour Patch Kids are delivered)
LORN :: I let two people on my list provided that they bring me Sour Patch Kids, and one of them came through!
IAAL :: So is that on your Rider?
LORN :: Hahaha!
(Mary Anne Hobbs enters the green room and pays compliments to Lorn)
IAAL :: I meant to ask you, being from Milwaukee, does that alter you sound or is part of your sound?
LORN :: No, there is nothing going on there. Actually, let me retract that. There’s a big Punk and Hard Core scene in Milwaukee. Its that sort of dirty basement, shit head, smelly mutha fuckers that just wanna get down and brutal. You know what I mean, and punch each other in the best way. That is really important to me, more so than going out to clubs. But I kinda wish Punk shows had this kind of bass. Other than that Milwaukee is dead.
(Now sitting with Flying Lotus, Samiyam, and Lorn – the following is our talk about the current music scene and it’s ensuing hype and possible future. Listen to the audio below.)

Sour Patch Kids – A green room must have!
Flying Lotus – Live Band
At the drop of the first beat of their holographic jazz set, I saw an entire audience’s jaws hit the floor (and stay there) as we were pummeled for close to two hours of non stop future jazz funk beat scene bass machine music. Whew! It was hot -really, really hot, and you knew amongst a sea of kids pumping their fists in the air and begging for more that you were seeing a little bit of music history going down before your eyes. Truth! Someone got a bootleg of that?
