A Fine Example of a Press Kit
The other week I went on a rant about the sloppy, disorganized, or the otherwise non existent state of PR, EPK’s and Advances for the ever growing slew of West Coast (and beyond) electronic music producers, independent labels, or booking agents out there. Check the story here for my list of what is needed and when.
I want to highlight an artist package I received recently as a possible example of inspiration. The key to this press kit was that it got my attention. The depth of its presentation was such that, no matter if I was going to like the music, I was going to clear a space in my day to give this group the attention it deserved.
Here’s what I got: My letter carrier delivered a notice that something was waiting for me to pick up at my local post office. When I got there I was surprised to find that a redCola Records had sent me a long poster tube. Within I found a limited edition silkscreened poster titled “Venus,” which I’m totally going to frame, a letter describing the music project they represent, called Obtain (a new project of East Hollywood artist and producer Jonathan Paul and Dutch artist Von Munchausen) and a business card with a 128MB USB thumb drive (photos, links and music) taped to it. Wow. Okay, now you have my attention!

Not every band has to go to this length. But if you can dream up something like this and can afford it in both time and money, then do it. Send an experience, items that underline and enhance the landscape of your musical experience.
